Daily Narrative A long day of driving with a milestone neither of us thought we would ever see, Theresa drove over half of the miles! Brian is advocating that Theresa now shoots for 50% of the trip's total mileage, your cards and e-mail could help make this happen! The day began in quiet Ironwood, MI, and most of it was spent driving along the south shore of Lake Superior and through rural north Michigan countryside. Late in the afternoon we reached Sault Saint Marie, where crossing a bridge puts you back in Canada, Ontario this time. Any way we analyze the map, going through another stretch of $3.00 a gallon gasoline is preferable to Chicago and Detroit.... We spent an hour or two exploring the Sault Saint Marie locks, which manage traffic between the Great Lakes Superior and Huron, actually a really fascinating mechanical feat. We also finally broke down, after reading signs in windows of restaurants all of the way across Michigan, and bought a "pasty". Turns out to be some kind of meat product, cabbage, potatoes and carrots wrapped up in dough, it was apparently a favorite of miners in Michigan long ago. It reminded us of a chicken pot pie. We drove on into some nasty construction in Ontario and then on down the beautiful road (just a little too late for pictures, sorry) to Manitoulin Island on Lake Huron. Manitoulin Island is the largest freshwater island in the world and holds the port from which we will catch a ferry in the morning, taking us lower in Ontario and closer to New York state. We arrived a little late and, as the whole town appeared to be asleep, camped at the ferry dock for the night.
