Daily Didactic

Branching out this morning, we headed to what we would call the “young person” hostally part of town. Touristy, but more geared towards the twenty something crowd. Not to hook up, mind you, but for some reputedly cheap breakfast. We ate at the amusingly named Cafe Cafe Antigua. The breakfast was probably what you would imagine; inexpensive, uninspired, filling, and less expensive than where we have been. This one probably won’t go on repeat. Theresa painted and Brian continued this venture until late morning.
We wandered the streets back by Iglesia de La Merced to our AirBnB. Directly across the street from our AirBnB is, reportedly, one of the nicest hotels in Guatemala. So much so that the president of Guatemala has been there for a few days. It’s actually been an entertaining process getting in and out of our front door, directly outside of which have been strings of black SUVs, well dressed security looking folks, and men with machine guns. They seem to be gone now, so it was time to go check out the digs of the rich and famous for ourselves. Parts of the hotel are open to the general public, as they contain Mayan ruins, a collection of Central American artwork, and some upscale shops. It was gorgeous and we may go back for a tour at some point. The real coup (Brian understands) was the chocolate shop, where Theresa scored some sliced orange chocolate dipped magic.
Today (with a much better understanding of how to get there) we jumped the shuttle up the hill to the El Tenedor Del Cerra cultural park. This is a decidedly higher end location than we have been frequenting. A hilltop “park” of art installations, a convention space, and a restaurant that we understand we can’t afford. In spite of all of that the shuttle and wandering around are all free and we very much enjoyed it. This definitely belongs on an Antigua todo list. We spent an hour and a half exploring and then caught the shuttle back down the hill.
We had a late afternoon early dinner at Antigua Brewing (yes, it’s embarrassing) and walked the fifteen minutes back home. We enjoyed a quiet evening in watching American television over the internet. The world is magic.

Where we slept last night.
